The City Cleaners sign is from the 1940s or 50s. I asked current owner Kathy if she knew more about the history of the sign, or when it got covered with the acrylic casing that protects it, but she din’t know, it was before when she bought the business from it’s last owner.
As I sat outside sketching the sign on a friday afternoon, a steady stream of customers came through the store. It’s good to know that the business is doing well- when that happens, the sign is usually safe. And that’s one less sign to worry about in San Jose, a city of glorious vintage signs, too many of which are on the edge of disappearing.
