Andy’s Pet Shop opened in 1950 on the Alameda. Their sign was designed by the Brite Lite Neon Sign Company. The sign projected into the intersection and was hit a few times by passing trucks. The macaw part of the sign is original, but the part with the lettering used to be green and is now blue. In 2010, Andy’s Pet Shop moved to it’s present location. The sign was installed on a truck near the store for some time. It is now in the back room at the store (where I sketched it), lying on it’s side.
Repairing and installing these signs is an expensive process. But even in this state where it lies taken apart, you can see that this sign would have been spectacular, day or night.
Let’s hope the sign comes up at the new location again sometime soon!

OMG, I remember this pet shop and its sign. As kids, we used to go into the shop on the Alameda and visit all the animals until they kicked us out, because they knew we were not buying customers. But they let us reenter the next day, and then would kick us out again. This process was repeated for years.
They’re still a lovely store and when my kids and I visit, they never kick us out 🙂
