Futurama Bowl (now Safeway)

Googie signs are the best, there’s such an air of optimism to their almost-brash, futuristic look. When you take that and adapt it to a sign for a Persian-themed bowling alley, you get a fantastically whimsical, Dr. Seussian sign. Here’s what the original Futurama’s sign and the bowling alley building that went with it looked like. Aren’t they something else?

Opened in 1961, the bowling alley closed about 30 years later and became a Safeway grocery store. Luckily the sign was saved and it stands today topped by a Safeway logo and flanked by palm trees.
